While you might be worried, stay calm and act fast. Here’s a guide on what to do in this situation while you head to an emergency dentist for children.
What to Do If a Baby Tooth Is Knocked Out
When you look at your child’s mouth and see a baby tooth came out, focus on making sure there isn’t any other damage to their teeth or gums. Take a mental note of anything out of the ordinary, so you can let their provider know. In the meantime, soak a clean washcloth in cold water and have your loved one gently bite down on it. This can reduce swelling and stop any bleeding.
At your child’s visit, your provider likely won’t replace the baby tooth. Doing so can damage the permanent one underneath, so a spacer might be used to prevent any shifting. That way, their oral development doesn’t get affected.
How Should a Permanent Tooth Be Handled?
If it was a permanent tooth that was knocked out, then here’s what you should do:
- Only touch the crown or chewing surface of the tooth.
- Clean it in a still bowl of water, milk, or your child’s saliva. Don’t rub it or use chemicals. The cells on the root can help with reattachment.
- Place the structure back into its socket and have your loved one gently bite down on a paper towel or washcloth.
- If you can’t do the step above, then place it into a glass of milk or their saliva.
- Call to get an urgent visit within an hour. This gives your child the best shot at saving the structure.
Your loved one might be able to get a splint to hold the tooth in place as the gum and bone grow around the root again. However, if not, then you may need to explore replacement options like a partial denture.
No matter what, a knocked-out tooth can be worrying, so follow the steps above. That way, you handle the situation confidently and help your child protect their oral health.
