There are all kinds of foods that can boost your immune system, give you more energy, and generally promote your overall health. These five snacks, however, contain vitamins and minerals that can specifically help you fight off gum disease. If you’re worried about bleeding gums, keep reading so you can add a protective boost or two to your diet!

#1. Tea or Coffee

Both of these popular beverages contain polyphenols – a naturally occurring chemical compound often found in plants. Polyphenols have been shown to reduce gum inflammation, prevent plaque formation, and impair bacteria growth. So choose your preferred beverage, and try not to add too much sugar.

#2. Almost Any Dairy Product

Dairy products like milk, cheese, and yogurt contain calcium, which you might remember as being important for growing strong bones. Calcium also happens to make up a significant portion of your tooth and jawbone structure, and deficiency in this mineral has been linked to an increased risk of gum disease.

#3. Crunchy Vegetables

Pretty much all vegetables are good for you in one way or another, but the crunchy ones are particularly effective at washing gum disease bacteria out of your mouth. The texture stimulates saliva production, making it more difficult for bacteria to stick to your teeth and gums.

#4. Fatty Fish

This includes (but isn’t limited to) salmon, mackerel, herring, and sardines. Fatty fish are rich in omega-3s, which, along with its anti-inflammatory properties, can help prevent tissue damage caused by gum disease. Just remember to brush your teeth – both to avoid bacteria build up and keep your breath fresh!

#5. Nuts

Small but mighty, nuts also contain fortifying vitamins and minerals like calcium and omega-3s. The vitamin E in almonds, hazelnuts, pecans, cashews, and walnuts provide some extra protective power by reducing gum irritation.

Along with good oral habits like brushing twice daily, flossing once per day, and visiting your dentist biannually, incorporating these five items into your meals can strengthen your gums and promote their health. If you’re looking for more ways to protect your smile, pick up a recipe book and get ready to have some fun in the kitchen!
